RAINBOW BOA

Brazilian rainbow Boas are very colourful snakes originating from Brazil. They are described as being brownish, orange and red in colour with black markings creating a beautiful jungle like appearance.  They are known as being rainbow due to their beautiful iridescence. In the sunlight from head to tail, they shine a beautiful rainbow.  These snakes typically reach 5 to 6'ft with some exceptions being 7'ft. These are the perfect snake for any intermediate keeper. As juveniles they can be a bit nippy, mellowing out into adulthood.  Rainbow Boas are semi arboreal so will often be found in the trees.  Rainbow Boas require a high amount of humidity therefore they have a reputation of being more difficult to keep in captivity.  With the right knowledge rainbow Boas make perfect pets.

HOUSING

Brazilian rainbow Boas are semi arboreal meaning they spend half their lives in the trees so providing your rainbow boa with lots of branches and purchase will be important. A glass enclosure is not recommended for rainbow Boas as glass does not hold humidity as well as other options such as PVC. Pvc enclosures are recommended for rainbow Boas. Your baby rainbow boa can start off in a 30 qt tub, eventually moving into a 3'ft enclosure. Into adulthood you want to move your rainbow boa into a 5' long enclosure as they do need lots of space to move around.  A fogger or mister is recommended for their enclosure to keep up with the high humidity needs. 

TEMPERATURES

Brazilian rainbow Boas come from, of course, the rain forests of Brazil! A rain forest in Brazil can range anywhere from 74゚F to 90°F so keeping your rainbow boa at a temperature of 86°F for basking and around 78°F for the cool side will be recommended.

HUMIDITY

When thinking about rainbow Boas one of the most important things to be thinking about is humidity. Maintaining the correct humidity for your rainbow boa will be essential to its survival. Rainbow Boas prefer a humidity range between 80% and 90% never allowing humidity to drop below 78%. A fogger or an automatic mister is definitely recommended. If not, sprang the enclosure 1- 2 times a-day will be required.   It is important to keep your rainbow Boas enclosure very clean. Due to the high level of humidity your rainbow boa could suffer skin irritations if the enclosure is not clean regularly.

LIGHTING

A proper day-and-night cycle is required, although they are nocturnal. Are UV B bulb is recommended for rainbow Boas. A 5.0 rapti sun is a perfect option. The UV B bulb should always be changed every 6 months to ensure that it works properly and that you turn you are uvb bulb off at night time. 

FEEDING

Rainbow Boas love to eat, they love their food. These snakes need to eat frequently even into adulthood. Juveniles can start on pinkies, moving up, as the width of your snake grows.  Eventually into adulthood you could increase food to medium rat and feed once every 10 days your rainbow boa should always be fed every 10 days.

SUBSTRATE

 Chosing a substrate that will absorb and hold moisture is most important to consider for your rainbow boa. We recommend coconut bark or rapti chip. Please change the substrate every 6 weeks to assure cleanliness puppy pads also hold moisture but they are not recommended as they will need to be changed quite frequently and do hold odor. Paper towel is also not recommended as it will need to be changed daily. 

WATER

Water is very important for rainbow Boas.  Providing a large dish for your rainbow boa to soak will be important. You will need to change your rainbow boas water every day so it's always fresh. 

TEMPERAMENT AND HANDLING

Rainbow Boas are recommended for intermediate keepers. These snakes may or may not be nippy as juveniles. Most rainbow Boas are easily handled. As your rainbow boa grows and gains confidence, they will adjust to the routine and be amazing pats. Be sure to keep on a strict feeding schedule to assure your rainbow boa isn't hungry during handling. Rainbow Boas are much more active than common Boas and will love to explore around.
